The Director of Government Relations assists the VP for Government and Community Relations and senior management
with NYBG’s government relations strategy including: budgetary requests, meeting and event coordination, representing
NYBG in multiple coalitions, and maintaining strategic relationships with elected officials, agencies, and their staff.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Lobbies government on budgetary and legislative matters with a primary emphasis on City government; provide
secondary support for NY State and Federal matters.
Represents the Garden in major advocacy coalitions; creates internal reports and manages follow up.
Works with government agencies and Garden staff to manage government contracts, regulatory matters, and
miscellaneous needs of the Garden.
Manages grassroots advocacy initiatives involving NYBG stakeholders, staff, volunteers and the public concerning the
Garden’s programs and requests.
Drafts correspondence and public testimony for the Garden’s officers.
Schedules, plans, and manages meetings with external stakeholders; drafts minutes of meetings with community,
coalition, or governmental groups and records public actions.
Interacts with NYBG senior staff to help solve needs of the Garden.
Tracks government funding awarded to NYBG and completes data requests from City and State agencies.
Drafts reports and memoranda concerning the Garden’s programs, funding strategies, and relationships.
Regular night and weekend work expected, some travel required.
Assists the Vice President as needed; supports departmental events as needed.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Excellent written and oral communications skills required.
Minimum of 5 years working directly with or within city or state government is required; particular experience with City
Hall budget making process a plus. Experience working for or with Bronx elected officials a plus.
An in depth understanding of governmental processes, city agencies and their jurisdictions is required.
Track record of securing governmental funding is preferred.
Experience leading, or working with, large coalitions and partnerships to influence government.
A strong understanding of the elected officials and current events at the various levels of government.
Ability to strategize and work as a team with internal and external colleagues.
