The clerk will perform a wide variety of general secretarial duties in support of the Justice of the Peace. Duties include
entering case information filed in Justice Court, receiving payments, posting funds, issuing receipts, warrants and mail
The clerk will also receive phone calls, mail, and emails related to cases and weddings and other legal proceedings under
the purview of the county. The clerk must have the ability to skillfully deal with matters and situations with efficiency and
Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
Assist the public in the office, on the phone, by mail or by email.
Data entry of Justice Court cases.
Schedule events and hearings.
Issue warrants and service.
Collect filing fees, court costs and fines.
Assist in managing the court’s calendar.
Requests jury panels for trial.
Keep archives in order.
Scan case files.
Cross-train in civil, criminal, and bookkeeping functions.
Performs other duties as requested by the court.
Actively works toward professional development by attending continuing education events..
Minimum qualifications & Requirements
High school diploma or GED.
Customer service experience.
Computer use experience.
Phone etiquette experience.
Ability to type 50 WPM
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to prioritize and organize, filing skills, knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet computer programs, ability to
operate office equipment, ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing), ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with court staff, co-workers, county employees, department heads, elected/appointed
officials, attorneys, the news media and the general public. Comprehensive knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and
punctuation. Good knowledge of financial records and filing systems.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
Lift and carry up to 20 lbs., use of vision and depth perception; maintain the ability to walk, kneel, and bend during work
