Job Purpose:
A Supervisory Position that Supports the Lab Through the Completion of Advanced Food Microbiology Job Duties
Duties and Responsibilities:
Completion of all laboratory activities including, but not limited to:
Logging in client samples, checking Analytical Request Forms and Sample Traceability Forms and delivery of materials to
the laboratory
Media and reagent preparation
Cleaning and sanitation of labware, equipment, lab areas, etc.
Sample and waste disposal
Processing and plating of environmental samples (sponges and swabs) and product samples on Petrifilm media and pour
plate methodology
Preparation and processing samples and media
Conducting water activity (aw) & pH analyses
Performance of routine, preventative and emergency maintenance on equipment or contact of service personnel if needed
Food pathogen analysis utilizing the BAX (PCR) system
Plating of quantitative & performing of qualitative quality controls
Performing quantitative & qualitative microbial analyses (i.e. Salmonella, Listeria spp., Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Total
Plate Count, S. aureus, etc.)
Monitoring and recording activities:
Equipment temperature checks
Balance checks
Environmental & water sampling
Completion of daily and weekly checklists as assigned by Laboratory Manager
Inventory of laboratory media and consumables
Reviewing & preparing of laboratory results
Prepare or assist in the preparation of product development or client services proposals, associated documentation and
final reports for product development or client projects
Completion of other analyses according to the appropriate Standard Operating Procedures, Test Methods and Work
Instructions.
Verification & Validation activities (i.e. media quality checks, autoclave sterilization temperatures, pH, aw calibration,
fermenter validations)
Lead or assist in investigations related to contamination and procedural or analytical deviations or errors in the laboratory
and ensure corrective actions are developed and implemented
Following all activities and procedures under the ISO 17025 standard and the Good Laboratory Practices regulations
Assist in activities related to manufacturing, fermentation and research projects
Support the Research Microbiologist and Culture Collection Manager for all activities related to inoculum preparation,
maintenance and development of the culture collection and all research projects
Supervision of Laboratory Staff in absence of Lab Manager
Other Duties as Required
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
Bachelors Degree in Food Science, Food Microbiology, Food Safety or Quality Assurance or a Science Degree that Included
Laboratory Curriculum (i.e. Chemistry Lab, Biology lab, etc.)
Masters Degree in Microbiology Preferred
Specialized Knowledge
Advanced Computer Skills; Must be Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
Food microbiology, including an understanding of food pathogen and PCR analyses
Understanding of the ISO 17025 Standard
Skills
Ability to Follow Written and Verbal Direction and Maintain a Laboratory Notebook
Excellent Written and Verbal Communication Skills

Able to Work Independently & Make Sound Decisions
Positive Attitude and Ability to Work as Part of a Team
Professional Certification(s)
HACCP or PCQI certification, a plus
Experience
At least 3 years experience in Food Science, Food Microbiology, Laboratory, Biology, Chemistry, Food Safety, Quality
Assurance or Quality Control in a food laboratory setting
At least 1-year supervisory experience
Working Conditions:
Temperature Controlled Laboratory Environment
Physical Requirements:
Ability to Stand for Extended Periods of Time
Ability to Lift 25lbs
