Position: Ranger Intern Salary: $200 per week Type: Training Location: Coos Bay, OR
Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land
Management Coos Bay Field Office is seeking 3 Park Ranger (Resource Maintenance/Management) Interns to dedicate 16
weeks working directly with the BLM staff at Loon Lake Recreation Site, located off the central coast of Oregon.
This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic, beginning professionals with a background in parks and recreation, natural
resource management, environmental studies or a closely related field, who possess a deep interest in advancing their
career goals through hard work and commitment in conservation.
Start Date: Spring 2019 (TBD)
End Date: Fall 2019 (TBD)
Location: Loon Lake Recreation Area/New River Area, Oregon. Loon Lake Recreation Area is located 20 miles east of
Reedsport, Oregon. Situated in the heart of the Oregon Coastal Mountain Range, Loon Lake is a popular coastal recreation
site hosting a premier campground with a warm, sandy beach surrounded by Douglas fir, Western hemlock, and Red cedar
forests. Loon Lake covers 260 acres, is 2 miles long and 190’ deep. During summer, the Lake is popular for boating,
waterskiing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming, as well as relaxing on the sandy beaches along the lake and
forest. The campground is located adjacent to the lake, accessible by trails. Loon Lake is open to day visitors as well as
campground visitors.
Compensation: Interns will receive a $200/week living stipend. Housing will be provided at no cost by the BLM. Housing is
shared occupancy with other interns and/or BLM staff.
AmeriCorps: This position is eligible for a 450-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1566.14) upon successful completion of
internship service hours. Additional enrollment is required to be eligible.
Position Description: The ACE Intern will work directly with the BLM Park Manager and recreation staff to create a fun and
safe environment for campers at Loon Lake and New River Area. The intern will be responsible for preparing and giving
educational programs to park visitors. They will also rove the day use and camp sites to greet and answer visitor questions,
and help with special events in the campground or in other BLM recreation sites. Maintenance duties will include cleaning
camp sites, refuse pickup, vegetation management, painting, fence work, landscaping, as well as janitorial duties.
Project may include the operation and use of push and rising lawn mower, weed trimmers, 4x4 pickups, tractors, and
various power hand tools.
The ACE intern will also interact with park visitors and may assist with special events.
Physical Demands: This is a very physically demanding position. The ACE intern must be physically fit to perform the duties
of the position. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required in operating equipment, lifting trash containers, moving tables
and benches and etc. The ACE intern will routinely lift ad carry items weighing 30-50 pounds and will be required to wear
personal protective equipment such as respirators, hard hats, safety goggles, and ear protection. These positions also
requires frequent interactions with the public.
Work Environment: This position may be exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors
(Temperature from 40 degrees F to 90 + degrees F) Exposure to sun, dust, wind and rain.
Qualifications: Applicants for the position must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and/or experience in parks and
recreation management, natural resource management, environmental science, or a related discipline. The interns must be
resourceful, adaptable, and able to work comfortably alone or in a group.
Internship is available to US Citizens and Permanent Residents only
Between the ages of 18 to 35
Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals and demonstrate effective communication
skills with the public of all ages and backgrounds
Must have a valid driver’s license; clean driving record, and the ability to provide documentation
Must have a desire to gain a deeper understanding and relationship with the natural environment and understand what it
takes to manage our country’s most revered natural places
Must be physically fit for outdoor work in all types of inclement weather
English proficiency required
Knowledge and ability utilizing GPS equipment in the field
Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle on steep, rough terrain, possibly pulling a trailer
It is highly desirable to have a personal vehicle, as it is difficult to secure reliable rides for groceries, travel, or partake in
other activities during off hours/days

The Intern must be willing to represent ACE and the BLM in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users
